He turned 25 on the day of the shoot.

촬영하는 날 그는 25살이 되었다.

And as Korean actor Lee Min Ho blew out the candle of the birthday cake local retail giant Bench gave him, we saw a glimpse of the artist as a young man, his personal-public intersecting for a blow’s worth of a few minutes.

한국 배우 이민호는 Bench에서 받은 생일케익에 촛불을 껏다

He smiled easily, laughed with his team. And that was it, the actor engulfed by a flurry of handlers and stylists preparing him for the next shot.

그는 편안하게 미소지었고 그의 팀과 함께 웃었다. 그리고 그게 전부였다 그 배우는 다음 촬영을 위해 준비하는 스타일리스트와 handler들에 둘러싸여있었다.

We had traveled more than a thousand miles from Manila to Seoul, Korea, where the photo shoot of Bench’s latest foreign endorser would take place.

우리는 마닐라부터 Bench의 최신 외국인 endorser (광고에 핵심 메세지전달자)의 사진촬영이 있는 서울까지 1000마일 이상 여행했다.

And for the uninitiated, someone who’s not into the whole Korean craze like me, it was an eye-opener.

그리고 한국에 열광하지 않았던 나처럼 경험이없는 사람들에게는 눈을 뜨게해주는 경험이었다.

The Lee Min Ho entourage is a well-oiled machine, one that knows how to protect its best asset.

이민호의 entourage(안투라지: 스타주위 일을 보는 사람들 측근-매니저,스타일리스트 등 다 포함)는 그들 최고의 자산을 보호하는 방법을 아는 기름칠 잘된 기계같았다.

We were told that a) he would not answer personal questions and b) we would only have 10 minutes with him each.

우리는 a) 개인적인 질문은 대답하지 않을 것

b) 그와 각각 10분만 주어진다 고 들었다.

But you get it. Lee Min Ho is one of his country’s biggest stars, an actor with so much crossover appeal, he’s crossed over all the way to the Philippines.

하지만 당신도 알거다. 이민호는 그의 나라에서 가장 큰 스타 중 하나이고 아주 많은 분야에 매력을 가진 배우이고 필리핀서까지도 사랑을 받고있다.

While Boys Over Flowers is the project he’s most remembered for, he’s also had similar success with headier fare like City Hunter and the drama Faith.

꽃보다 남자는 가장 인상깊었던 작품이지만 그는 또한 시티헌터나 신의같은 작품으로 성공을 거두었다.

At the shoot, he seemed a sensible fit for Bench. He had an easygoing way about him and an easy smile even when he was surrounded

by an army of handlers — perfect for a brand that’s going on 25 itself but has always maintained its humor and relatability.

촬영때 그는 Bench의 실용적인 fit에 잘 어울리는 것 같았다. 그는 편안해했고 hander들에 둘러싸여있을때도 편안히 미소지었다.

YOUNG STAR: Your Boys Over Flowers series has a big following in the Philippines. Why do you think Filipinos respond so much to Korean culture?

Youngstar: 꽃보다 남자가 필리핀에서 아주 큰 인기가 있는데 필리핀사람들이 왜 한국문화에 큰 호응을 한다고 생각하는가?

LEE MIN HO: I don’t think Boys Over Flowers is actually representative of Korean culture. But I do think that it has a side that attracts females. It touches females’ emotions. That’s the common charm Boys Over Flowers has, towards the female viewers.

사실 꽃보다 남자가 한국문화를 꼭 대표한다고 생각하지는 않는다 하지만 여성분들이 매력을 느끼는 부분이 있다고는 생각한다. 여성분들의 감성을 자극한다. 그게 여성 시청자들을 향해 꽃보다 남자가 가진 매력이다.

Do you enjoy doing projects like that?

작품활동을 즐기는가?

I think being in a TV show about romantic relationships is something that can be fun, the drama.

로맨틱한 관계에대한 드라마를 촬영하는 건 즐거울 수있다.

And then of course, even from the reality, there’s freedom on the show. That’s the enjoyable part.

그리고 물론 실생활에서는 더 그렇겠지만 드라마에서는 자유로울 수 있다 그게 재밌는 부분이다.

So what made you sign up with Bench? I’m sure you don’t just sign up with anyone. What about this particular brand?

Bench와 어떻게 계약하게 되었나? 아무하고나 계약하지 않을거라는 건 확실한대..

이 브랜드가 가진 특별한 점이 무엇인가?

When I saw the offer from the Philippines, I saw that it’s an international brand.

필리핀으로부터 제안을 받았을때, 국제적인 브랜드로 알고있었다.

And when I saw the clothing today, I saw that it could be widely loved.

그리고 오늘 제품을 보니, 널리 사랑받을 수 있을거라는 걸 알게되었다.

It has a youthful feeling and it’s very casual. I think a lot of my fans would really enjoy it.

How would you describe your personal style?

당신의 스타일에 대해 어떻게 설명할 수 있나?

I prefer clothing that has darker colors, a lot of neutrals. I like things that are comfortable and clean, really casual.

나는 무채색이나 어두운 색깔을 좋아한다. 편안하고, 깨끗하고 정말 캐주얼한걸 좋아한다.

What about Bench makes sense with your style?

Bench제품 중 당신의 스타일에 맞는 건 무엇인가?

Well, especially the cardigans that are dark in colors, those are really the ones I personally prefer.

음..특히 어두운 색깔 카디건이 개인적으로 가장 맘에 들었다.

Some of the colorful clothing too, actually.

사실 컬러풀한 몇몇 제품들 또한 맘에 들었다.

Those are things I don’t usually wear in real life, like the colored jeans, but as I was trying them on, I found it pretty fun and enjoyable.

컬러플한 진제품들 처럼 제가 실제로 잘 입지 않는 제품들을 입어보니 아주 재미있고 즐거웠다.

So which of the items were your favorites? If you could recommend a piece to the fans, which especially?

그럼 어떤 제품이 제일 맘에 들었나? 팬들에게 추천한다면 특히 어떤 제품?

The cardigan that I’m wearing right now, actually. All the cardigans they provided actually, I really like. The colored pants, the colorful jeans I would recommend to my fans.

내가 지금 입고 있는 카디건이다. 여기서 나오는 모든 카디건제품들 모두 맘에든다. 컬러플한 바지와 컬러플한 청바지를 팬들에게 추천하고싶다.

Do you have style icons? Are there particular people you look up to?

스타일 우상이 있나? 당신이 본받고 싶은 특별한 사람이 있나?

I’m not the type of a person who looks at somebody and thinks, “Oh, that looks good.” I usually try things and see if it looks good on me. I don’t have a style icon.

나는 다른사람을 보고 '오, 그거 멋지다' 하는 타입이 아니다. 나는 주로 시도해보고 나에게 어울리는지를 본다. 스타일 우상은 없다.

Now you’ve been going into more serious roles in projects like The Faith. Can you tell us about the show?

신의 작품에서 더 중요한 역할을 맡았는데 그 작품에대해 말해줄 수 있나?

The basic plot of the show is I’m from the past and from the Korean dynasty. He comes to the prison and kidnaps one of the talented doctors. The plot’s going to revolve around that so it’s going to be action-packed and, of course, some romance.

이 작품에 기본적인 플롯은 나는 고려시대에서온 과거의 사람이다. 그는 감옥에 가서(? 현대에 가서일텐데 prison이 아니라 present인데 기자님 오타인듯) 유능한 의사를 납치해온다. 이 플롯을 중심으로 액션도 있고 물론 약간의 로맨스도 있다.

What other roles do you look forward to playing?

어떤 역할을 연기해보고 싶은가?

There’s no particular role I want to play in the future but anytime I receive a , I try to see if the character’s attractive or someone I would personally wanna play. If I think I can be good at it, then I’ll work on the project.

나중에 해보고 싶은 븍정한 역할은 없다 하지만 내가 대본을 받았을떄 그 캐릭터가 매력적인지 내가 개인적으로 연기해보고 싶은 캐릭터인지를 볼것이다. 내가 잘 할 수있다면 그 작품을 하게 될것이다.
